Nearly a dozen Black-owned Philadelphia restaurants participate in Black Restaurant Week, featuring meal deals from June 9-23, plus events with local chefs and bartenders.
Philly joined Black Restaurant Week in 2018, not long after the nationally recognized event began in Houston in 2016.
The goal of the participating cities is to build wealth in the Black culinary industry and celebrate African, African American and Caribbean cuisines.
BLACK RESTAURANT WEEK FAST FACTS
- Eleven restaurants around Philadelphia offer breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner and happy hour specials.
- American, African and Caribbean restaurants serve familiar comfort foods and international favorites.
- Special events include a pop-up dinner and a bartending competition.
The Philadelphia restaurants participating in Black Restaurant Week include Cedar Park spots like Asksum Mediterranean Kitchen and Booker’s Bar & Resturant, plus the Olney location of Just To Serve You, which dishes out soul food and seafood. Restaurants in neighborhoods across the city and the Philadelphia Countryside are part of the 2019 event.

Philly is rich in Black culture and history, and its restaurant scene is a prime example. Some of the city’s most delicious and dynamic menus are served at Black-owned restaurants.
Featured Events
Black Restaurant Week hosts three ticketed events starting Tuesday, June 11 with Aroma: Culinary Panel Discussion, an industry event featuring business experts. Attendees can learn how to raise capital, operate a business and mass-distribute recipes.
On Thursday, June 20, Power of the Palate: Bartending Competition invites guests to sip and vote for their favorite cocktails crafted by local mixologists.
The final event of Philly’s second annual Black Restaurant Week is the Art of Flavor pop-up dinner on Friday, June 21, featuring CBD-infused food, art and cocktails. Chef Elijah Milligan, who grew up in Philadelphia and recently returned to local kitchens, leads the event. Milligan also co-founded the Cooking for the Culture dinner series, which highlights Black chefs around the city.

At its heart, Black Restaurant Week is about supporting the community.
While much of the two-week event in Philly and other participating cities is about fun with food, Black Restaurant Week has partnered for a second year with Family Agriculture Resource Management Services.
The nonprofit supports farmers of color by providing free legal and technical services and its F.A.R.M.S. to Food Bank Program helps communities experiencing food insecurity.
